Kickboxing developed in Japan and grew widely in popularity in America in the 60s and 70s.
Kickboxing can be a contact sport, which involves tournaments and a combination of karate and boxing techniques. Full contact rules are a mixture of traditional karate and boxing. Kickboxing tournaments are also fought in bouts (several rounds with breaks in between). Time within and between bouts varies from country to country. There are many techniques that are used in contact kickboxing. Punching and kicking are the most popular. Examples of punches that can be used during kickboxing tournaments are the jab (a punch from the front hand to the opponent’s head or body), the uppercut (a rising punch to the chin), and the overhand (a vertical punch with the rear hand). Examples of popular kicks are the front kick (using the balls of the foot), the sidekick (using the heel of the foot), and the roundhouse kick (using the front of the foot). In addition to punching and kicking, some places such as Japan allow knee and elbow strikes such as the straight knee (also known as a front heel kick), the side knee (used during close-range fighting), and the upward elbow (used to hit the opponent’s nose or chin).
As you can see, there are many techniques someone can use to attack their opponent, but there are also techniques of defense against those attacks. For example, slipping involves the rotation of the body in order to avoid an incoming attack. Parrying or blocking involves use of the hands to deflect attacks.
Different places around the world have different ways of contact kickboxing, such as in Japan. Oriental rules in Japan allow fighters to use their knees while fighting, including below-the-waist kicks. Elbows are not allowed. But in America, full contact rules say opponents aren’t allowed to strike with their elbows and knees but are able to hit one another with kicks and punches that strike above the waist, unlike international rules. Therefore, there can be many variations of contact kickboxing rules.
