At UMAF we believe in applying the traditional lessons of karate to the modern world. We have therefore developed interactive programs that educate children and adults on how to safely and effectively resolve bullying. Our program was created based on the foundation of our student creed, which is: “I will develop myself in a positive manner, and avoid anything that will reduce my mental growth or my physical health. I will develop self -discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others. I will use what I learn in class constructively and defensively and never to be abusive or offensive.”
Our program was developed for use in the local schools and through onsite seminars at our dojo. Our bully prevention curriculum is unique in that we also pay attention to what the “would-be-bullies” are trying to communicate with their behavior. Our program is designed to work with the students, school staff and families to educate children on how to redirect their energy away from bullying behavior to positive outlets. Students are also taught how to prevent and avoid confrontations, and to prepare and protect themselves if found in a position as a victim of bullying. Bullying comes in many forms, including physical aggression, verbal abuse and cyber-bullying. Our goal is not only to build awareness, but also to effectively take a stand and stop bullying.
